Although the man behind London’s Music Of Life hip hop label, scratch mix producer Harris has signed solo to London, debuting with an obviously timely 113⅓bpm rap (by the 3 Boom MC’s) based on Michael Jackson’s current hit plus some echoing words from his “bad self”, James Brown (in four mixes).

Possibly the strongest most consistently useable rap set ever, with the JB’s ‘Gimme Some More’/O’Jays ‘For The Love Of Money’-based 98⅙bpm ‘Moneyearnin’ Mount Vernon’, Jackson 5 ‘I Want You Back’/’ABC’-based (0-)97⅔bpm ‘Overweighter‘, 98½bpm ‘I’m Getting Paid‘, 0-92½bpm ‘I’m Gonna Make You Love Me‘, 0-96bpm ‘Dedicated‘, 0-101- 102½bpm ‘Here We Go‘, 96⅓bpm ‘Chunky But Funky (Remix)‘, 105⅔bpm ‘On The Dance Floor‘, 100⅔bpm ‘Mr Big Stuff (Remix)‘, 0-79⅔bpm ‘Nike‘, 96½bpm ‘Rock The Bass‘, 0-38⅛/77¼-0bpm ‘Don’t You Know‘. Hot stuff indeed, which makes MCA’s decision to repromote ‘Mr Big Stuff’ all the stranger.

BANANARAMA featuring Stock Aitken Waterman ‘Mr Sleaze (Rare Groove Remix)’ (London NANX R14)
The version that’s really worth getting, Bananarama’s vocals having been all but removed from this ‘Roadblock’-like (0-)101½bpm burbling instrumental funk groove with James Brown’s veteran trombonist Fred Wesley brought to the fore. Flip to the also remixed (although still vocal!) cheerfully cantering 117⅓bpm ‘Love In The First Degree (Eurobeat Style)’.

GLEN GOLDSMITH ‘I Won’t Cry (The Rare Block Mix)’ (RCA PT 41494R)
As previously mentioned, here’s the now even more commercial 0-103⅔bpm remix in sax burbled jiggly ‘Roadblock’ style.

CAMEO ‘The Cameo Megamix Two’ (Club JABXR 57)
As previously warned (which may be why the now B-side relegated ‘She’s Mine’ has sold so badly), here’s the latest brilliant 0-110-111¼-109-111-110⅔-112-114½-116bpm megamix of Cameo’s hits created by LA Mix’s Les Adams, his second (and another award winner?).

MASTERPIECE ‘I Can’t Wait’ (Serious Records OUS 8)
Very slick jerkily flowing 117⅔bpm canterer by Stevie Wonder’s backing singer Lyn Sidmart and Gwen Guthrie’s musical director Bill Hagans, created with such facile skill it sounds instantly familiar and comfortable (edit/long acappella flip).

OLIVER CHEATHAM ‘Be Thankful For What You’ve Got’ (Champion CHAMP 12-54)
Gently unfurling straightforward pleasant 99⅚bpm revival of William DeVaughn’s 1974 classic, lazily swaying as ever (datedly cantering 115½bpm ‘Show Me‘ flip).

JUNIOR ‘Yes (If You Want Me) (Yardie Remix)’ (London LONXR 149)
Still including his original US-styled joltingly cranking 0-112-0bpm Janet Jackson-ish version (plus the more soulfully jogging Michael Jackson-ish 104⅙bpm ‘Not Tonight‘), this vastly improved 112bpm remix by Simon Harris is styled much more for the UK market, with rapper Einstein actually taking the vocal spotlight amongst samples of ‘Pump Up The Volume’ and stuff (strong Drumappella too).

BROTHER D ‘Clappers Power’ (US Clappers CL-12-0008)
Calmly reasoned though thoroughly militant powerfully pushing chant-along (0-)106¾-107bpm rap based on the much scratched in James Brown’s ‘Soul Power’ from 1971 (in five increasingly freaky dubwise mixes).

ARMANDO ‘Confusion Mix (“Land Of Confusion”)’ (US Westbrook AG-WB-4)
Strange synth squiggled skittery sparse exciting fast 127½bpm jack track instrumental, interestingly different enough to stand out (two synth-less 126½bpm and 126bpm rhythm tracks as flip).

JEROME ‘SECRET WEAPON’ PRISTER and Output ‘Say You’ll Be’ (US Tuff City TUF 120008)
Davy D-produced nice gently soulful (0-)106½-106⅙-106⅔bpm jogging duet, rather than the rap everything might lead one to expect, nothing startling although the sort of sneaky nagger that could end up as a simmering “sleeper” in London at least (inst flip).

RAGTYME featuring TC Roper ‘Fix It Man’ (US Bright Star Records BR-006)
Mildly amusing 135bpm house bubbler (in three different mixes) with the fix it man drawling, “Here I stand, with my tool swingin’ in my hand” — get the picture?

ANGELA WINBUSH ‘Sharp’ LP (US Mercury 832 733-1 Q1)
Maybe by totally creating this debut solo album all by herself, René’s ex-partner has bitten off more than she can chew, as her songwriting isn’t that strong, especially on the Slammin’ Side’s boring brittle fast sub-Janet Jackson-ish 108bpm ‘C’est Toi (It’s You)‘, (0-)120bpm ‘Run To Me‘, 122bpm ‘Imagination Of The Heart‘, and 122½bpm title track. However, there’s also the ‘Sexual Healing’/’Between The Sheets’-ish 84⅓bpm ‘Sensual Lover’, and the Quiet Storm side has the Ronald Isley-duetted sweetly wailing (0-)61½bpm ‘Hello Beloved’, and equally pleasant 75bpm ‘No One Has Ever Cared (Like You)’, 64¼bpm ‘You Had A Good Girl’, plus – now also due out here on 12 inch – the spine tingling sultry soaring Anita Baker-ish 37/74bpm ‘Angel’ (Club JABX 60).

THE CONTROLLERS ‘For The Love Of My Woman’ LP (US MCA Records MCA-42043)
Timeless and largely downtempo mellow male vocal group soul, for traditionalists maybe, with the lightly rolling 101bpm title track, maturely chugging 113bpm ‘Keep In Touch‘ and — for some reason, reissued — jogging 94⅔bpm ‘My Secret Fantasy‘ its only “dancers”, alongside the Reggie McArthur and Cynthia Curry- duetted sweet 70bpm ‘Love Is On Our Side’, slow 66¾bpm ‘Play Time’, 0-31-0bpm ‘Knocking At Your Door’, 0-33½/67-0bpm ‘No One’s Ever Loved Me More’, recently 12 inched 0-89⅓bpm Sleeping Alone’.

ROGER ‘I Want To Be Your Man’ (Reprise Records W8229T)
Zapp’s leader Roger Troutman in his helium-breathing distinctive vocodered vocal style on a pleasantly weaving 81½bpm smoocher with an equally typical jazzily picked guitar solo, joined by further jazzy instrumentation for the flip’s 80⅓ ‘I Really Want To Be Your Man (Remix/Edit)’.

Fair enough homegrown simple fast 124bpm snickety pulsing house speeder (more fully vocal New Romantic-tinged 123¼bpm ‘You Take Me High’ flip).

Phil Harding-mixed exciting 120½bpm house-ish angular galloper with violent shouts.

ROSALINE JOYCE ‘Lovers Soul’ LP (Jam Today ROSLP 1)
Lovers rock meets soul, as the album’s title suggests, to result in self-effacing small-voiced sweet UK cooing on the pleasant Loose Ends-ish wriggly 108½bpm ‘No Questions, No Answers’, ‘Casanova’-ish 89½bpm ‘Falling In Love Again‘, chugging old 110⅓bpm ‘Friends Not Lovers‘, sultry 85/42½bpm ‘You + I (Started Together)’, jittery 112⅓bpm ‘I Will Never Be Your Lover’, jiggly Shannon-esque 110⅓bpm ‘Hands Off (Keep Your Distance)’, flying latin-tinged 120¼bpm ‘From Me (2U)’, a steady if unspectacular seller for several weeks.

WAYNE HERNANDEZ ‘Corners Of The Sun (Convenience Mix)’ (Epic WAYNE T2)
Barry Blue-produced densely tugging jiggly (0-)108⅔-0bpm roller huskily moaned by another of CBS UK’s new black hopes (Single Version too, and the tenderly jogging 92⅔bpm ‘I Am The Night‘).

DONNA ALLEN ‘Sweet Somebody (Extended Groove Mix)’ (Portrait PRT XXX T2)
Lurching bass synth driven loopingly rolling (0-)113¾bpm vocally insistent jiggler with a spikily tinkling texture and brassy stabs (Dub and disjointedly jolting 108bpm ‘Bit By Bit‘ flip).

MISSION ‘Search’ LP (US Columbia BFC 40759)
The guys show Surface-like potential on several tracks, especially the slower ones like the superb deeply soulful 60½bpm ‘Lover For Life’, lush 90⅓-0bpm ‘Ready To Give My Heart‘, meandering 0-77¾bpm ‘Lena‘, whole Nick Martinelli produced the excellent already 12 inched 95bpm ‘Show A Little Love‘ and 104⅓bpm ‘Sensuous Mood‘, plus the jiggly chugging 107⅓bpm ‘Back On Track’, but this latter and the other snapping 0-108bpm ‘Energy To Burn’ and jittery 115⅓bpm ‘Turn Me Up’ “fast” ones are rather dated.

BOX TROUBLE & DONNA *D* ‘Hit The Deck’ (Rise Records RISE T7)
Sharply backbeating quite hypnotic 113-0bpm instrumental chugger from Detroit, with a few title line inserts (and a beat-losing edit near the start), not as exciting as ‘Pump Up The Volume’ but something like a mixture of that and The Brutal House’ (in three mixes).

(ORIG.) BIG APPLE PRODUCTION VOL. III ‘Genius At Work’ (US J&T Records JT-103)
Traditionally mixed and edited, rather than scratched, 0-107⅓-109⅓-113½-111-112½-116⅔-119½-118½-0bpm megamix running through many classic break beats, the flip having a rap augmented 107⅔-108-107½-108-107⅔bpm mix of Trouble Funk’s ‘Pump Me Up’ and a rhythm extended 116½bpm remix of Janet Jackson’s ‘When I Think Of You’ – so all a bit dodgy, for collectors.

SPANISH PRINCE ‘Maria’ (Fourth & Broadway 12BRC 75)
Haunting 0-98-0bpm gently jiggling LL Cool J-type rap ballad (dub too), originally the US flip but here in turn flipped by the previously hotter, Jackson 5-cutting and -whoa-oh-chanting. 0-100½bpm ‘Dance Everybody Dance’.

JUDY LA ROSE ‘Voodoo Love’ (Champion CHAMP 12-52)
Winston Sela-produced bright pop-slanted and quite Hi-NRG 122bpm catchy galloper in a Bananarama-ish House Mix (and latin flavoured instrumental so-called Chic House Mix flip) by the two Petes, Hammond and Waterman.

THIS YEAR’S BLONDE ‘Who’s That Mix (Jack It Up Mix)’ (Debut DEBTX 3034)
Nigel Wright up to his soundalike hit medley tricks again, producing a rambling 0-119½-117-116-116½-117-118½-117½-119½-120-121bpm medley of Madonna’s hits (by Tracy Ackerman, again?), trickily starting but stronger the longer it’s on.

JODY WATLEY ‘Don’t You Want Me (Remix)’ (MCA Records MCAT 1198)
Angrily buzzing jittery 111⅔bpm backbeat thudder which sounds quite beefy until she starts singing just like Madonna (in several mixes, four on import).

REGINA BELLE ‘You Got The Love (Philly Remix)’ (CBS REBE T1)
Smoothly pulsing fast churning 126¾bpm attractive soul bounder, a tricky tempo as neither house nor Hi-NRG although it’ll mix with them, unless maybe people revive Gwen McCrae’s similar ‘Keep The Fire Burning’ (mournful 89⅚bpm ‘Gotta Give It Up’ flip).
