Danny Rampling was the other trend setting jock who recently revived this classic Timmy Thomas tune, via his remix of the old Illusion remake, followed now though by ‘Evil’ Eddie Richards from Milton Keynes with his very own remake, sung by the gruffly soulful E-Mix of the Family Quest MCs over a gently undulating and subtly reggae-ish throbbing 114.8-115.2-114.8-115bpm (Evil Ed’s Dubby Club too), flipped by the samples patched, basslines and drumrolls driven (plus vocal noises from the likes of Sly & The Family Stone ‘Dance To The Music’), instrumental 126-0bpm ‘Ulysses (Theme From Coldcut)’ and its alternative 124bpm ‘Ulysses (The Groove)‘.

ARETHA & WHITNEY ‘It Isn’t, It Wasn’t, It Ain’t Never Gonna Be’ Arista 612 545)
Even better than anticipated, the Misses Franklin & Houston’s gloriously whomping and romping duet has been remixed by not only Robert Clivilles & David Cole but also by the ubiquitous Teddy Riley (& Gene Griffin), Teddy obviously whipping up a swingbeat jitter in his main A-side (0-)115.4bpm Extended Remix and harder (0-)115.4bpm Hip Hop Mix, while Clivilles & Cole keep things jiggly if more garage-ish in their (0-)117.33bpm After Hours Club Mix and striding 117.2bpm House Mix. Four strong mixes, two wailing ladies, one big hit!

STEVE “SILK” HURLEY ‘Work It Out Compilation’ (Atlantic 782 003-1)
Actually featuring in the main other artistes produced by Steve, this album of all new material has his own solo surprisingly swingbeat-style though go go-based terrifically jaunty 112bpm ‘A Bit Of Jazz’, the already promoed (and now US 12-inched) STEVE “SILK” HURLEY FEATURING M.DOC credited jerkily lurching powerful 123bpm ‘Work It Out‘, RISSE (a girl) nagged strong fluidly pumping 123.4-0bpm ‘Love Baby‘ and untidy Aretha reviving 119.8-0bpm ‘Chain Of Fools‘, JACKSON & MOORE (vigorous soulful guys) wailed jittery bounding 123.83-0bpm ‘Think!‘ — no, its a new song! — and jerkily jangling 119.5bpm Can’t Let Go’, and JAMIE PRINCIPLE muttered moody cool twittery loping (0-)121-0bpm ‘Cold World‘ and similar breathy 122-0bpm ‘Drive Me‘.

BÄS NOIR ‘I’m Glad You Came To Me (Club Mix)’ (10 Records TENX 282)
Not so much Roy Ayers as Herbie Hancock/ Quincy Jones-ish in its late Seventies influences, I now realise on closer examination, this Ronald Burrell-created jerky staccato Mary Ridley and Marie Bivins cooed and wailed 0-121.6-0bpm jazz-funk/house fusing leaper is proving to be an enduring catchy grower, with a freakier flanged and phased Dub Mix and (0-)121.6bpm Radio Edit too.

Paul Simpson presents SIMPHONIA ‘Can’t Get Over Your Love’ (RePublic Records LICT 028)
Reviving one of his pseudonyms, last used in 1986 for some releases on Atlantic, Paul features grittily wailing Carmen Brown and the Vince Montana-ish vibes of Boyd Jarvis on this DJs pleasing but rather formlessly rambling garage shuffler, much stronger actually in its beefily instrumental self explanatory 120.8bpm Boyd Jarvis Vibes Mix and the tighter 119bpm Radio Mix than the A-side’s 120-119.8-119.6bpm Full Club Mix.

FAX YOURSELF ‘Sunshine 89’ (AVM/Sound Of Belgium SOB 12/7, via Spartan)
The Eddy Grant-originated Rockers Revenge ‘Walking On Sunshine’ classic in its hot if slightly pedestrian modern Belgian remake is here 122bpm in its cheerfully clomping, chanting, stuttering and twittering Extended Mix, drier Original 12″ Mix and sharper Radio Mix, coupled also by the unrelated jittery instrumental 123bpm ‘Techno Jam‘ (nothing to do with Detroit!).

BIG DADDY KANE ‘Smooth Operator’ (US Cold Chillin’ 0-21281)
Although excellent and the A-side, this Mary Jane Girls ‘All Night Long’ bass-lined and Mohawks ‘Champ’ organ sampling (among other sneaky snippets) soulfully spoken rather than rapped 92.66bpm rolling jogger (92.51bpm Dub) has inevitably been overshadowed — hopefully not for long — by the flip’s shuffling bass chugged and Karyn White “ooh” sampling 116.66bpm ‘Warm It Up, Kane‘ (Dub too), mainly because it’s the “fast” side.

E-ZEE POSSE ‘Everything Begins With An “E”‘ (More Protein PROTX 112, via Virgin)
A relative stiff when first out in March but snapped up now following the increased pop orientation of trendy jocks, this yowling Jimi Hendrix guitar introed then squeakily gurgling Caron (MC Kinky) Geary ragamuffin-ishly rapped bumpily jolting 0-119.8bpm jaunty Euro-type chugger (in fact co-created by Haysi Fantayzee’s Jeremy Healy) has been coupled on this week’s brand new re-pressing by a guitar-less more starkly thudding still 0-119.8bpm The Sir Frederick Leighton Remix (oh, very arty!).

GINA FOSTER ‘Love Is A House (Remix)’ (de/Construction PT 43074)
Previously pleasant but now superb, this Leon Sylvers III produced belated version of the English girl’s own co-penned song — a US smash for the Force MDs some time back — has been given a sultrier Soul II Soul flavour by Joe Dworniak’s chunkily rolling 92.5bpm remix (still flipped by the 82.4bpm ‘Take Me Away’ and 108bpm One Kiss’), hopefully this time around a proper hit.

Also due out here imminently on Syncopate, this Kenny Ortiz masterminded “dance compilation” album has the Mantronik created sizzling, sampling, scratching and chanting 120bpm hip house SOUND FACTORY ‘Cuban Gigolo’, self created powerful jittery jumping 120.6bpm “ragamuffin in house fashion” KEITH THOMPSON ‘Can’t Take It‘, Larry Heard created sweetly orchestrated (0-)114.66bpm gentle instrumental TRIO ZERO ‘Twilight‘, Charlie Dee Diaz created T-Connection percussion sampling fierce 0-124-0-103.75-124bpm house then rap then house CROWD CONTROL ‘Throw ‘Em The Chicken‘, self created attractive 110.33bpm rap introed jiggly swaying soulful GLENN “SWEETY G” TOBY ‘Somebody To Love Me‘, Aldo Marin & Benji Candelario created 0-124.4-0bpm bubbly Brazilian/Middle Eastern combining 3 BIG MEN ‘Happy‘ and the same act’s 124.4bpm hollow jiggly ‘The Time Is Now For Action‘, Warren Doris produced painfully flat girls sung 121.6bpm at times ‘Soul Makossa’-ish MADAGASCAR ‘Like This Like That‘, Short & Sweet created dull 0-93.33bpm slow jolting VICE VERSA ‘Do It Steady‘, plus the already UK-released Blaze mixed vigorously bounding 118.66bpm girls wailed CHARVONI ‘Always There‘.

WESTBAM ‘and Party’ (German Low Spirit Recordings/Polydor 889 477-1)
Germany’s sometime mixing champion, the Westphalian DJ’s latest creation is a familiar jaunty samples woven strong if repetitive 122.8-0bpm catchy pop-house jiggler in Extended Club and 7″ Mixes of a perhaps even better percussion pattered less busy differently titled ‘and Conga‘ Extended Dub Mix, worth checking.

LIL LOUIS ‘French Kiss (Re-Layed)’ (ffrr FXR 115)
As warned, here are the vocal remixes, the (0-)123.2-123.4-0-123.6-0bpm “Innocent Until Proven Guilty” Vocal Mix being usefully wailed by plaintive Pasquale (a girl), while the (0-)122.8-123-123.2-123-0-123-123.2-0bpm “Back Up Your Conversation Mix” features bursts of seductive chat by husky Lil Louis himself and French muttering Alia Ammar.

BIG LOUIS ‘French Kiss’ (Living Beat Records SCAM 1)
Cheekily confusing though not that similar and much shorter (0-)123-0-123-0bpm cover version by Simon Harris, in Club and Vocal Mixes with 122.8bpm Bonus Beats and the central orgasmic Come-A-Pella.

HONESTY 69 ‘French Kiss’ (German BCM Records 12306)
A rather more accurate efficiently straightforward German cover version in its (0-)123.75-0-123.5-0bpm Hot Version, flipped by usefully differing (0-)123.6-0-123.6-0bpm Triple “M” Mix and (0-)123.75-0bpm Diamond Mix variations, already briefly in The Club Chart on sales reaction the week it came in.

RUBIX ‘Desiderio Latino’ (Italian Discomagic TECHNO 12.55)
And now the Italian adaptation of ‘French Kiss’, short and only abruptly pausing with rather more female chat then actual groaning, in (0-)122.7-0-122.7-0bpm Italian and Latin Versions, forbidden for sale to minors under the age of 18 — but that may be because the label features a provocatively naked bottom!

MR. FINGERS ‘Frenck Kiss (Re-Remix)’ (Easy Dance Records LR-02)
Deliberately mis-spelt, this (very badly) UK pressed smackingly chugging 122.6-0-80-122.6bpm ‘French Kiss’ adaptation is another that has actually even more Italian female chat but also its fair share of orgasmic groaning, making it a useful alternative, flipped by a classical music introed then noisy synth chords and chanting overdubbed even wilder 122.8bpm so-called Slow version.

MAN MACHINE ‘Man Machine (Cybernetik Intervention)’ (Rhythm King MMAN 1T)
Possibly still only on promo, this ultra-commercial ’19’ meets ‘Stakker’-type 125.4bpm twittering electro/acid instrumental could be a pop smash (alternative 125.4-0bpm Automatik Elektronik flip).

CIRCUIT (featuring Chris Patrick) ‘Stand For Nothing’ (Collision 12CIR 2)
Presumably another Jolley Harris Jolley creation, this sinuously soulful sparse “pshta pshta”-ed 120bpm deep house-ish ticker is flipped by unlabelled (on promo) 119.8-120bpm alternative vocal and instrumental versions.

DIZZI HEIGHTS ‘Gangster Boogie’ (Viceroy Records 12 VICE 3, via RCA/BMG)
The rapping dreadlocked London hairdresser’s fruity brass and organ backed catchy simple jerky jiggler has been remixed by Hardrock Soul Movement, but on information lacking white label there’s no knowing the names of the different mixes, 118.4bpm, 0-120.8bpm, 120.4bpm and 0-120.4bpm listed in order on A and B-sides, all good.

LIZA MINNELLI ‘Losing My Mind (Extended Remix)’ (Epic ZEET 1), sounding predictably like the Pet Shop Boys (& Julian Mendelsohn) production that it is, a sultrily breathy unhurriedly swaying but percussively rattled and thumped (0-)119.8-0-119.8-0bpm treatment of Stephen Sondheim’s song from the ill fated 1971 musical ‘Follies’;

MADONNA ‘Cherish (Extended Version)’ (Sire W2883T), Tiffany (and other adolescent pretenders)-like plaintively pitched swirling little 131.75bpm trotter, not the Association’s old song, pleasant enough without necessarily being one of her major hits;

CHERRY ‘Magic Holiday (Riviera Mix)’ (Sublime Records LIMET 107), Pete Hammond remixed so PWL-style but in fact Milan recorded routine clompingly chugging 120bpm formula “jaunty” Eurodisco by an Italian girl, far removed though from the fashionable Italo-disco cutting edge;

KARL DENVER MEETS PICKERING AND PARK ‘Wimoweh 1989’ (Factory FAC 228), bizarre jittery thumping 130bpm remake by Mike Pickering & Graeme Park of yodelling Karl’s African chanted 1962 hit, the same tune as ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ now becoming blandly bubbling pop-house:

JESUS LOVES YOU ‘After The Love (10 Glorious Years Mix)’ (Virgin PROT 212), sounding like Boy George in disguise (which it probably is), a mysteriously promoed huskily breathed lightly throbbing (0-)118.6-0bpm chugger with an inspirational atmosphere (except the chorus is a negative “after the love has gone, how can we carry on”);

PAUL McCARTNEY ‘This One’ (Parlophone I2FtX 6223), typical jerkily whimsical (0-)106-105.8bpm pop, flipped now by the previously promoed (on anonymous white label) thundering jittery pseudo-funk 120bpm ‘Good Sign‘ — meanwhile, we still await his much publicised Continental disco hit, ‘Ou Est Le Soleil?‘
