BEATS & PIECES

EN VOGUE apparently can no longer leave their US tour supporting MC Hammer, despite prior arrangement to fulfil their commitments here next month, which means that all their UK concerts have been cancelled, including two sold out Hammersmith Odeon shows and their appearance at the PresJam 8 weekender — where, however, some of the big stars mentioned last week as “strong possibilities” will indeed appear live to fill the breach, so all is not lost! . . . RePublic Records have promoed back to back the early rap classics T-Ski Valley ‘!Catch The Beat!‘ and Fatback featuring King Tim III ‘Personality Jock‘, both due commercially on a ‘Back To The Old School‘ double album along with Younger Generation ‘We Rap More Mellow‘ (at last!), amongst others . . . 4 For Money’s “naggingly familiar” catchy piano riff in ‘A Moment In Time‘ sounds of course like a speeded up adaptation of the piano from the Rolling Stones’ ‘We Love You‘, a song of support (complete with prison sound effects) for Mick Jagger while he was briefly gaoled in 1967, never one of their major hits — except right now its influence seems to be turning up quite regularly! . . . Ce Ce Rogers’ ‘All Join Hands‘, reviewed as an import, has slipped out here on the quiet (Atlantic A7888T) . . . Unique 3 (featuring Karin)’s weird wailing and bleeping ‘Rhythm Takes Control‘ (out next week) is 125¾bpm, Steve Harvey’s mournful calmly striding ‘I’m The One (Extended Version)‘ (out in a fortnight) is 109bpm, while Ruby Turner’s lovely slinkily jiggling ‘It’s A Cryin’ Shame (UK Remix)‘ is 106¾bpm . . . Janette Shaw is building a DJ mailing list for Optimism Records and MTR Records, on 081-442 4248 . . . Graham Gold, in his Diamond Time video compiling rather than Kiss 100 fm breakfast DJing role, is surprised that so far there are only 40 subscribers to his monthly Club Clips service, offering the 20 best available current “hard toon” dance videos with brief gaps between them (rather than in the excellent smoothly segued continuous style of the firm’s more pop slanted DiscEyes programmes, with which existing subscribers are presumably well satisfied, perhaps explaining their resistance to the non-continuous compilation style?), the latest Club Clips edition from a couple of weeks back having for instance videos of the most recent hits by Gang Starr, LL Cool J, Lalah Hathaway, Caron Wheeler, Bass-O-Matic, Mica Paris, Titiyo, Snap, Monie Love, Curtis Mayfield & Ice T, Bell Biv DeVoe, Basic Black, The Chimes, Londonbeat, Paula Abdul, the adventures of Stevie V, Adamski, Orbital, The Grid, and MC Tunes versus 808 State, not a bad and still very current selection — full subscription details, for bona fide disco operators only, from Diamond Time Ltd, 16/26 Rosemont Road, London NW3 6NE (telephone 071-433 3355, fax 071-794 8383) . . . Reachin’ Records are looking for someone — preferably either another record company or a promotions/PR company — to share their office space in Acton, contact Thomas Foley on 081-749 8619 . . . Motown authority Karen Spreadbury, as she’s known in the world of PR, as usual has used the pen-name Sharon Davis for her latest book about black music, ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, a biography of her friend Marvin Gaye, due to be published on November 15 in nice time for Christmas (Mainstream Publishing, £11.99 hardback) . . . Stevie B, Javed Mirza and Butch (grrr!) take over Kingston on Thames Options for a Tuesday XFADE heavy duty dance night starting this week . . . Andy, Femi and guests have replaced the late lamented Sub Club with fortnightly (this week, October 18) Azucar Thursdays at Westbourne Park’s Woody’s in Woodfield Road . . . Friday (19) finds a One World rave with DJs David O’Grady, Paul McCourt, Keith Connolly and Alan Ferris in the Mandela Hall at Queen’s University Belfast . . . David Dyer (1 York Street, Canton, Cardiff CF5 1NB) has been appointed DJ at Cardiff’s University Hall, where three discos a week are held for up to 2,500 students — but last term over 15,000 records amassed by the students since 1966 were stolen, and David optimistically hopes that maybe if record companies would add him to their mailing lists he could begin to build back up to this amount again . . . Loaded, a new label, are looking for upfront DJs who play hardcore house for their exclusive mailing list. Work details and some recent chart returns showing the music you play should be sent to: Loaded, The Studio. 27 Ship Street, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AD . . . Decca has serviced DJs with a seven inch of Carreras/Domingo/Pavarotti’s operatic reading of ‘O Sole Mio’ because reputedly some bright spark played it over a house instrumental at a rave — and it worked! . . . BOOMIN’!

HOT VINYL
Reviewed by Jay Strongman and James Hamilton

KOOL SKOOL ‘You Can’t Buy My Love’ (102½bpm) (US Capitol V-15604)
Not a misprinted Beatles oldie, this is a Jesse Johnson & Keith Lewis created deadly infectious heavily juddering and pattering choppy new jack swing jiggler, conversationally rapped between sweet title chanting girls with some jazzily picked Benson-ish guitar halfway, powerful stuff that could go far, in raw James Brown funk climaxed 12-inch Version, Instrumental, Radio Edit, and slower more starkly snapping 7-inch Edit (101bpm) mixes, plus the jittery smacking ‘Make Up Your Mind (LP Version)‘ (114¾bpm).

DEEPSTATE II ‘Everybody Get Down’/Tribal Chant Mix
DEFINITION OF SOUND ‘Now Is Tomorrow’/‘Moira Jane’s Café
PAPA SAN ‘Dancehall Good To We
MAIN SOURCE ‘Looking At The Front Door
SOUND OF SHOOM ‘I Hate Hate
DOUG LAZY ‘H.O.U.S.E.
PUNCHY ANDERSON ‘I Need The Green
SHINEHEAD ‘The Real Rock
TURBO ‘Freedom’
TOO SHORT ‘The Ghetto

MAUREEN ‘It’s My Life (Boilerhouse Mix)’ (103¾bpm) (Urban URBX 62)
Maureen Walsh reverts to just her first name for this Ben Wolff & Andy Dean (the Boilerhouse boys) mixed superb Soul II Soul-ish jittery tripping soulful swayer, attractively arranged with sinuously bumping acoustic-type bass, swirling strings, tinkling piano and jazzy sax gradually building up an infectious swingbeat jiggle, flipped by their Boilerhouse 7″ Edit and rivals Rockhouse’s much rawer Meltdown Mix.

JANET JACKSON ‘Love Will Never Do (Without You)’ (A&M AMY 700)
Yet another single from the ‘Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814’ album, timed to coincide with her UK gigs next week, this Jam & Lewis created bright jittery lurcher is in Shep Pettibone’s snappily surging new jack swing-ish Shep’s “Work It Out” Mix and starkly jolting The “Work It Out” Dub (102¾bpm), plus CJ Mackintosh’s lush acappella harmonies started then “too bad” prodded jauntily rolling UK Funky Mix (103bpm).

DJUM DJUM ‘Difference’ (Outer Rhythm FOOT 8, via Rough Trade)
Taking a while to build up through the exotic market type atmosphere of its then percussively rattling afro chanted ‘Jingo’-ish Steng Mix (123½bpm), or with a twittering ‘Twilight Zone’-ishly introed more routine electro sizzled blandly jiggling Cake Mix (123¼bpm), this useful raver was promoed without any details but sounds rather European, and interesting, and is out next week.

CATHY DENNIS ‘Just Another Dream’ (118½bpm) (Polydor CATHX 2)
The bubbly singer of D Mob’s ‘C’mon And Get My Love’ first released a year ago this Dancin’ Danny D produced plaintive pop rollicker (reminiscent of early Sheena Easton — and somehow she’s ended up rich enough!), now out again next week in Shep Pettibone’s brightly tumbling 12″ Mix, 7″ Mix, and “pomp that bass” prodded Alternative Bass Dub Version, likely this time to be a crossover smash.

RALPH TRESVANT ‘Sensitivity (Extended Version)’ (96¾bpm) (US MCA Records MCA12-53933)
Yet another old New Edition member goes solo, with a gently undulating Jam & Lewis created romantic swingbeat swayer tenderly muttered and breathed through a plopping beat borrowed from Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ era (7″ Radio Edit and sweet nuthin’s whispering Ralph’s Rap too), instantly big in London thanks to Kiss 100 fm.

JOMANDA ‘Share’ (US Big Beat BB-0019)
Created by Backroom Music Productions as usual, the girls’ soulfully wailed and sweetly chanted (with some nice “shooba de doo do”s!) jolting chugger may sound a bit ponderous on first hearing but builds bumpily nagging momentum in Club (105½bpm), acappella introed jaunty Raw (105¾bpm), breezy Radio (105¼bpm), instrumental The Groove (106bpm), thumping Big Beats and short dubwise Cut The Bass Dew (105¾bpm) mixes, coupled also by the tight bouncily bounding ‘Searchin‘ (118¾bpm).

K-KLASS ‘Wildlife’ EP (f.r.o. FRO 104T, via Eastern Bloc 061-839 1141)
Initially hard to find on white label but now in wider supply, this Mancunian rave instrumental four tracker has the piano pounded and brief bleeping breaks accented powerful ‘Into The Night’ (125½bpm), sparser twittery washing machine style ‘The Spirit‘ (127bpm), synth piped and piano plonked cantering attractive ‘Wildlife‘ (124½bpm), and properly bleeped, thumping and burbling ‘Exposé‘ (125bpm).

N.JOI ‘Anthem’ (124¾bpm) (de/Construction Records PT 44042)
Mark Ryder of M-D-Emm, Masters Of The Universe and most recently Fantasy U.F.O. produced this once mysteriously white labelled but now properly promoed four tracker by keyboardists Mark Franklin and Nigel Champion, with this girl wailed Italo house-type surging skittery canterer, the jerkily bounding techno ‘Manic‘ (124¾bpm), ambiently introed jittery flying ‘Jah Heaven‘ (125bpm), and juddery bleeping ‘Techno Gangsters‘ (124bpm).

PAL JOEY ‘Runaway’ (118¾bpm) (US Loop D’Loop Records LDLZ 101)
Certainly credited to Pal Joey as composer, with Reynald ‘Crazy Frenchman’ Deschamps as executive producer but no actual artist labelled as such (unless it’s by an act called #1), this attention grabber is a steadily snicking cheeky revamp of the Roy Ayers Ubiquity classic ‘Running Away’, simply flipped at 45rpm by Pal Joey’s plippety-plop shuffling ‘Here It Is‘ (123¾bpm). Dood’n doo!

BRUTAL BILL & ANTHONY ACID ‘(It’s Got Me) In A Spell’ (127bpm) (US City Limits Records CL 3006) Created by Bill Marquez & Anthony Caputo with Rob ‘Beehive’ Betten, this girl’s title repeating then instrumental, rumbling and bleeping episodic frantic frisky thunderer is in two untitled mixes, the second mix (126¾bpm) being more sparsely spurting, flipped by the girl’s title chanting twittery scurrying ‘What Has Been Joined (By God)’ in Brutal Acid Mix (124¾bpm) and thumping Brutal Acid Rub-A-Dub (125bpm) versions.

COOL DOWN ZONE ‘Waiting For Love (12″ Mix)’ (104¼bpm) (Ten Records TENX 318)
A calmly wailing girl nagged pleasant Soul II Soul-ish jiggler with some nice Spanish guitar, flipped by its less spacious LP Mix (104bpm) plus the afro and ragga chanted odd jittery rumbling ‘Value Of Life’ (103½bpm), while more recent is Ben & Andy’s fruity brass farted, Run-DMC ‘Beats To The Rhyme’ jittered purposeful Boilerhouse Remix (104¼bpm) (Ten Records TENR 318), flipped by their acappella Cool Down Key Bits plus again the 0-104.1bpm LP Mix.

TONY! TONI! TONÉ! ‘Feels Good (Ben Liebrand Mix)’ (117¼bpm) (Polydor/Wing Records WINGX 9)
Oakland, California, raised brothers Dwayne & Raphael Wiggins and cousin Timothy Christian quickly follow ‘The Blues’ here with this Ben Liebrand remixed funky drum driven breezily cantering leaper, dropping for a while into James Brown’s ‘Get On The Good Foot’ riff, the guys’ enthusiastic ensemble vocal work sounding much brighter than it does on the flip in DJ L.A. Jay’s scratching overlaid chugging 12″ Party Mix and Ken ‘Dr. Shaft’ Kessie’s original 7″ Edit, on UK release this week.

JOHNETTA ALSTON ‘Keep The Fire Burning (The Slamming Club Mix)’ (121¾bpm) (Global Village NORX 1, via Phonogram)
A total stiff when first promoed five months ago in its cute though rather pedestrian original trotting Club Mix (122bpm) (NORDJ 1), flipped by fractionally slower Village Dub and Girlfriend Mix instrumentals, this Nu Shooz ex-member’s modern update of Gwen McCrae’s 1984 stormer (house tempoed ahead of its time?) is now far friskier and finally flying in a brand new Dancin’ Danny D remix filled with skittery beats, flipped by its Jammin Instrumental, Percapella and Beats.

TERMINATOR X & THE VALLEY OF THE JEEP BEETS ‘Wanna Be Dancin” (110bpm) (US P.R.O. Division/Rush Associated Labels 44 73507)
Public Enemy’s DJ is joined by Celo from The Casino Brothers for this unusual disorientatingly scratching and swirling wordy rap, perhaps more for the head than the feet — unlike the flip’s again slippery scratching but more typically Public Enemy-ish, Chuck D droned and wailing Sister Souljah harangued ‘Buck-Whylin’‘ (100¾bpm), with its Instrumental and ‘Groove Wit The X-Man’ break beat, currently hot hip hop.

THE CHOSEN ‘Visions Of Life’ EP (US Fokus Recordings FK 001)
Laid down in London (with credited Northern influences) by Lenny Dee, Tim Taylor and Neal M, this sparsely raving ‘washing machine’-style five tracker has the episodically fluttering, bleeping and spurting ‘Visions Of Rhythm’, moody slow then flute echoed more ambient ‘Visions Of Space‘ (both 128bpm), flipped by the throbbingly driving twittery ‘Visions of Peace’, similar ‘Visions Of Dub‘, and disturbing swanee whistle-type tones punctuated rumbling ‘Visions Of Torment‘ (all 123bpm).

FLUKE ‘ Philly’ (117½bpm) (Creation Records CRE 90T)
Although Euro styled in fact from nowhere further than Beaconsfield, Bucks, this again home recorded lush electronically cantering episodic mainly instrumental raver is washed by swirling “strings” and other slithery synth effects (but it does not bleep!), in Philly and starker Philadelphia Mixes — or, if you believe the publicity blurb, Jamorphus and Jamoeba Mixes.

GUY ‘I Wanna Get With U’ (110¼bpm) (US MCA Records MCA12-53931)
Teddy Riley (who produced), Aaron Hall and Damion Hall have as usual made an instant impact among new jack swing fans with this slyly mumbled and chanted staccato P’funkily jiggling chugger, in 12-inch, Club, 7-inch Versions and a starker squidgily lurching TR’s Dub.

BLUE PEARL ‘Little Brother’ (Big Life/W.A.U! Mr. Modo Recordings BLR 32T)
Building smoothly from a slow orchestral style warm-up into a funky drummer rhythm, this slinkily wailed cool undulating strider is hauntingly beautiful, in Howard Gray’s Extended Version (107¼bpm) A-side mix and Steve Sidelnyk & Paul Rabiger’s soaring strings stabbed instrumentally starting Sister Mix (106½bpm), the commercial pressing due this week having an instrumental ‘Rollover‘ too.

PROJECT “86” ‘Industrial Bass’ (121¾bpm) (US Nugroove NG 060)
Does Nugroove release a new single every week? It certainly seems like it! This Howie How & Little Carlos created G.T.O. ‘Pure’-like excitingly intense droning and thrumming semi-bleeper is in Industrial and Backroom Mixes, flipped by the cymbal bashed sparsely pulsing ‘Total Recall (Original Mix)‘ (119¾bpm).

L’F’O ‘Brainstorm’ (122¼bpm) (Fast Forward LF 1, via 0708-755558)
Still white labelled but now in wider supply and starting to sell, this simple synth tone and cooing girl washed throbbing jittery bleeper (alternative B-side mix) reputedly is not, although on the other hand just might be, connected with the hit making L.F.O.

M.C. SHAN ‘Ain’t It Good To You (Extended Remix)’ (118½bpm) (US Cold Chillin’ PRO-A-4391)
Good though far from the hot import seller its Club Chart position might suggest, merely circulated here on a US promo, this fast word spitting but oddly female almost Monie Love-ishly pitched male rapper’s actual girl chorussed, Stax brass and James Brown yelps punctuated bouncily trotting bounder has throbbing instrumental Club Mix, Dub, and different slower Radio Remix/Edit (115½bpm) versions, doubtless available commercially too.

T.D.C. ‘Keep Groovin’ (Big One VVBIG 23, via Rough Trade)
Created in Brooklyn by ‘Oh Oh’ Omar Santana (and no relation of our own T.D.P.!), this word spitting New York trio’s frantically driving hip house jumper sounds like something a boxer might train to, in samples studded Original Mix (125bpm), Original Instrumental (125¼bpm), Bugged Out Instrumental (124½bpm) and differently treated Hip Hop Mix (123¾bpm) versions, out here this week.

T.D.P. ‘Let’s Dance’ (119¾bpm) (Reachin’ Records RERT 003, via Spartan)
While his brother André Leon tells ‘The Truth’, Curtis Ingram is now also solo as he follows up ‘Ladies (Let’s Go)’ with this “let’s dance” and “you got it” samples prodded sinisterly drawling hip house jiggler, flipped by its 7″ Radio Edit and Instrumental (120bpm).

BASIC BLACK ‘She’s Mine’ (US Sound Of New York MOT-4724)
Soul singer Darryl ‘Dezo’ Adams, keyboardists Walter ‘Dis Mucho’ Scott and Lloyd ‘Spec’ Turner, and drummer Kelvin ‘K.B.’ Bradshaw made their debut on Motown’s new jack swing label with this Today-type wailing bumpy slick jiggler in Club Mix, Extended Club Mix (113¾bpm), Club Instrumental (114bpm) and more funkily snapping LP Version (112½bpm) treatments, while out here now instead is the funky drummer and “too bad” sample started then chunkily strutting “where’s the party tonight?” type conversation studded P’funky-ish

‘Nothing But A Party’ (113¾bpm) (Motown ZT 44058)
in 12″, Radio and Dub Versions, both singles produced by Gene Griffin, as is their album ‘Basic Black’ (US Sound Of New York MOT-6307)with a slightly shorter ‘She’s Mine’ (113bpm), ‘Give Your Love To Me‘ (112bpm), ‘What Ever It Takes‘ (110bpm), ‘It’s A Man’s Thang‘ (98bpm), ‘Don’t Make Me Fall In Love‘ (112bpm), ‘Stupid‘ (113bpm), ‘Now Or Never’ (82bpm), ‘Special Kind Of Fool’ (30/60bpm), ‘Baby Can We Talk’ (36/72bpm), ‘Nothing But A Party’ (113¾bpm), all very neat if predictably formularised.

TECHNOTRONIC ‘Megamix (Club Version)’ (123-122¾bpm) (Swanyard Records SYRT 17)
Not apparently mailed to club jocks as it’s ‘product’ for their young pop fans, this is a straightforward greatest hits megamix by Mastermixers Unity of ‘This Beat Is Technotronic/Get Up (Before The Night Is Over)/Rockin’ Over The Beat/Pump Up The Jam/Move This’, flipped by Jo Bogaert’s gruffly muttered chugging ‘Raw Update (Remix)‘ (123¼bpm) and jerkily shuffling ‘Come On (Remix)‘ (121bpm). All Technotronic need now to become the new Boney M are some slower strong songs as well.

HAPPY MONDAYS ‘Kinky Afro’ (117½bpm) (Factory FAC 302)
Apparently produced by Paul Oakenfold & Steve Osborne, this jangling guitars and synthetic strings droned gloomy pop loper has a vaguely Stones-ish atmosphere and will obviously be a huge hit, but is a lot less funky for clubs than the usual run of indie rock dancers, with a more rawly rumbling Live Version (117¾bpm) as flip.

QUINCY JONES featuring SIEDAH GARRETT ‘I Don’t Go For That’ (US Qwest 0-21594)
The raucous co-presenter of ‘America’s Top 10’ on TV, Siedah goes hip hop or at the very least new jack swing for this jolting jiggler remixed from Quincy’s ‘Back On The Block’ album in Jon Nettlesby, Terry Coffey & Bokie Coleman’s corny “wooh yeah” prodded rumbling jumpy Mercenary Full Tilt Mix, Mercenary Db Mix and Mercenary Bonus Beats (109½bpm), plus Teddy Riley’s much harder and starker jittery MT M-Rap Version (which she does actually rap), Teddy’s Extended Mix and Teddy’s Freaky Jazz Groove (108¼bpm).

D-NICE ‘Crumbs On The Table‘ (Jive 1407-1-JD)
JAM MC ‘Ironweed’ (White Label)

  1. Deepstate II “Everybody Get Down”, reviewed this week by Jay Strongman (“heavy duty hip-house with a deep, deep bassline that drags you into the groove”), marks the first appearance of Danny Tenaglia, who picks up credits for writing, producing and mixing it. Noting that “club crowds are getting increasingly bored with this kind of straightforward hip-house approach”, Strongman draws our attention towards the Tribal Chant mix on the flip, which is “more sparse and less intense” – and it does indeed contain early traces of the sort of sound which Tenaglia would go on to develop.

  2. And once again because of someone back then believing we wanted to read (in HIS column) someone else other than JH’s reviews of the tunes we’re deprived of JH’s opinion of the massive Kiss FM rap tune “looking at the front door”.

Also albeit a bit of a nitpicking one nut a rare error by him Gwen McCrae’s “keep the fires Burning” wasn’t from 1984 but because of how sometimes you remember just what year something happened your youth I remember the club I was going to regularly when this tune was big and that it was 2 years earlier in the autumn of 1982.
