UK NEWIES

TOMORROW’S EDITION: ‘U Turn Me On’ (CBS A13-2098).
Actually getting bigger by the week on import, despite a downturn in recent chart placings, this doodling bass introed powerfully pounding 109-110-111-110bpm 12in jiggler has good soulful harmony interplay, dramatic brass, synth and guitar twiddles in amongst the thudding momentum (the flip has a less intense version).

GEORGE DUKE: ‘Shine On’ (Epic EPC A13-2872).
Punchy if somewhat shallow EWF-style squeakily clucked staccato bounding 119bpm 12in smacker with good beefy bass, the jerkily building 121bpm brass, synth and scat instrumental ‘Positive Energy‘ flip getting jazz-funk attention, while the imminent album’s ‘Ride On Love‘ is actually the killer (especially with Brandi’s ‘Watch Out’!).

CLAUDJA BARRY: ‘If I Do It To You’ (Ensign ENYT 223).
So deceptively simple it takes a few plays to register, this repetitively looping 113bpm 12in pulsator is basically a slower ‘Ring My Bell’ but without the “ptoo ptoo” syndrums! Toughening up considerably halfway with a gruffly rapping guy and good break, it mixes well out of Vicki “D”. 

AL JARREAU: ‘Roof Garden’ (Warner Bros K 17967T).
Falsely lulling then dynamically explosive, this superb vocal fireworks filled scatting and roaring 99/49-101-102bpm jazzy jitterer (sometimes sung as “does anyone want a bunk-up on the roof” — amongst other variations!) finally reaches 12in as flip to the dead slow ‘Our Love’.

TOM TOM CLUB: ‘Genius Of Love’ (Island 12WIP 6735).
Welcome and deserved re-release of the heavy funk 103bpm 12in girlie group semi-rapper which inspired a thousand covers (well, almost!), now in fact flipped by one of them, over the original track by Mr Yellow the gruffly rapping ‘Yella‘.

IMPORTS

RICHARD ‘DIMPLES’ FIELDS: ‘If It Ain’t One Thing . . . It’s Another’ (LP ‘Mr Look So Good’ US Boardwalk NB1-33249).
Although lacking one single cut quite as strong as ‘I Like Your Lovin’, the set as a whole is even better than his last one, potentially most like ‘Like’ being this languidly jogging bittersweet lush long 98bpm smoocher with conversational talking woven into the soulful title line chanting chix, the new ‘Papers’ being the yearning 30/61bpm ‘Taking Applications‘ (he’s looking for a fox!) with a sexy lady joining in the chat at the end, but the immediate action grabber has been his gorgeous re-recording of the Moonglows classic catch-in-the-throat 67/34-68bpm ‘Sincerely‘, while all equally good listening are the nice tender 87-88bpm ‘After I Put My Lovin’ On You’, jaunty 121-123bpm title track pulsator, lightweight loping 128-129bpm ‘(A Woman At Home And) A Freak On The Side’, spoken/sung 125-128bpm ‘The Lady is Bad’, and a true to its 1963 vintage revival of Jackie Wilson’s ‘Baby Workout’. You won’t be sorry if you buy it blind.

WAR: ‘You Got The Power’ (US RCA PD-13062).
From the upcoming ‘Outlaw’ album and flipped by their old 133bpm ‘Cinco De Mayo’, this excellent powerful jauntily chugging 118bpm 12in smacker is much more straightforwardly “disco” than usual, with nice vocal interplay in the urgent staccato lurching lyric pattern, and interesting jiggles between beats while zappy electronic effects and harmonica bursts add excitement overhead. Likely to be rather big!

SAINT TROPEZ: ‘Femmes Fatales’ (LP ‘Hot And Nasty’ US Destiny DLA-18004).
I never thought I’d be raving about a St Tropez album but this Rinder & Lewis-produced atmosphere-filled continuation of their earlier ‘Je T’Aime’ and ‘Belle De Jour’ is an entirely French spoken sound effects spiced usefully Imagination tempoed 84-87bpm scenario of “crime passionelle”, complete with a shooting and concluding radio news bulletin. The rest of the set sounds like Donna Summer, but it’s really worth it for this one beauty.

L.A. BOPPERS: ‘Where Do The Bop Go?’ (LP ‘Make Mine Bop!’ US MCA MCA-5281).
Attention getting jazzy brass kicks off this then “doobedoobedoobop bop bop” scatting raunchily jittering 113-114bpm vibrant good times high steppin’ strutter which should prove well nigh irresistible for sophisticated tastes, and makes a great single for radio play too.

XAVIER: ‘Work That Sucker To Death’ (US Liberty 7280-1).
Squeaky voiced youngster sounds like Stacy Lattisaw/Michael Jackson on a heavily thudding Prince-style 113bpm 12in funk smacker with lotsa vocal support and noises, the extremely ‘Off The Wall’ slicker synth twiddled infectious 0-115-116-115-116bpm ‘Love Is On The One‘ flip however being hotter and good with Goldie Alexander.

SPLIB: ‘Funky U.F.O.’ (US The Inculcation Band 981).
Bernie (Capt. Dobie) Hamilton-produced atmospheric brassily crescendoing slow purposeful 108-109-111bpm 12in smacking jogger with angrily spitting bass building a guitar culminated searingly intense long groove on the much better instrumental side. Interestingly unusual.

SHALAMAR: ‘Playing To Win’ (LP ‘Friends’ US Solar S-28).
No matter how formularised Motown’s oldies were they all had a joyful zest, whereas too often with Solar (their current equivalent) one is — as here — more aware of the formula’s careful contrivance, which gives a deadening effect that nowadays can’t compete with the rediscovered zest of so many “new dance” white groups, who you can believe are pleased to be alive. Doubtless a few tunes will surface from this lacklustre set, the most immediate being this vocoder spiked straightforward 117-118bpm smacker, the circuitously building lush 119bpm title track jiggler with gimmicky outro, languidly jogging 108bpm ‘A Night To Remember‘ and 103bpm ‘There It Is‘ slow rolling smackers, while unemphatic jumbled burblers are the 112bpm ‘I Can Make You Feel Good‘, 116bpm ‘On Top Of The World‘ and 116bpm ‘Don’t Try To Change Me‘, slowies being the 0-34bpm ‘I Just Stopped By Because I Had To’, 88bpm ‘Help Me’ and 76/38bpm ‘I Don’t Wanna Be The Last To Know’.

J. GALE GAYMON: ‘(If You) Study Long You’ll Study Wrong’ (US Alton AL-1512).
Jauntily jiggling steady 112-113bpm 12in chugger with rather wordy chick, answering chaps and rapping bits, the lady lapsing into Spanish for the livelier jazz-funk climax (instrumental flip).

PATRICK COWLEY: ‘Megatron Man’ LP (US Megatone M 1502).
A sudden influx of (very welcome) gay charts has thrown up the title track remorselessly pounding zingy 127bpm thudder with vocoder chants and thundering drums, powerful of its type and “wonderful for mixing” (to quote Subway’s John Richards), while ‘Lift Off‘ is a sparser 122bpm thumper with noisy effects, and ‘Get A Little‘ a bass rumbled 117bpm resonant chugger with chanting chix and more effects.

PHYLLIS NELSON: ‘Don’t Stop The Train’ (US Tropique TD 104).
Unattractively squawked ultra frantic drums throbbed 135bpm 12in Eurodisco galloper, number one in all the gay charts.
