BOOKER NEWBERRY III: ‘Love Town’ (Polydor POSPX 613)
Possibly the most viable successor yet to ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’ (unless radio gets frightened by lyrics about a red light district), this monster import smash is a great easily rolling chunky 113-114-115- 116bpm 12in swayer gruffly souled in Vandross/Benson-ish style, with a useful (though so far overshadowed) 117-118bpm ‘Doin’ What Comes Naturally‘ flip, both sides co-penned by Bobby Eli & Len ‘123’ Barry.

THE PAUL SIMPSON CONNECTION: ‘Use Me Lose Me (Lose Me Use Me)’ (US Streetwise SWRL 2209)
Fabulous buoyantly bounding 115bpm rattler with whooping and wailing female lead vocal over a soaring ’70s soul flavoured feel, culminating in rippling vibes, on 5-track 12in featuring a strong very Montana-ish vibey instrumental, slow piano introed even vibier ‘Reprise Me‘, drumming ‘Dub Me‘, short ‘Acappela Me’. Get two copies or at least dig out again ‘Heavy Vibes’, ‘Oh I Love It’, Carol Douglas ‘You’re Not So Hot’ and even Greg Henderson ‘Dreamin’ to expand the groove!

WICKETT: ‘Can’t Get Enough Of You’ (US Mr T Records Mr T-1002)
Wicked (well, it had to be — and really is!) great jerkily driving jittery 115bpm 12in rattler with staccato David Joseph-ish title line chants and some squawking sax all buried under the ‘Get Her Crazy’ beat (which can be made to mix usefully with Paul Simpson Connection too), ending with sparser vocodered Smurf effects (shorter vocal remix flip). Dyn-o-mite!

SHIRLEY LITES: ‘Heat You Up (Melt You Down)’ (West End/Arista WEND 121)
Excellent pacey electro driven solidly striding 120bpm 12in jiggler soulfully wailed by Miss Lites with possibly pop crossover appeal (and coincidentally the same rhythm as David Joseph’s newie), ‘Melt Down Mix’ flip.

STRIKE ONE: ‘Can’t Touch Me Anymore’ (Elite DAZZ 22)
Causing a stir at Gullivers off cassette for a while and now finally pressed, a chix sung languidly smacking 114bpm 12in swayer with nice sax, dub flip, well up to American standards but possibly not distinctive enough for pop crossover success.

NATASHA KING: ‘AM-FM’ (US Emergency EMDS 6536)
Confusingly beat switching introed but then regular rhythm box backed jittery 103bpm 12in ‘Don’t Stop The Music’-ish bumper with synth and interesting sax interspersing the good rhythm riding jaunty vocals (instrumental flip and bonus break).

PAUL HAIG: ‘Heaven Sent’ (Les Disques De Crepuscule 12IS 111, via Island)
Hard stark 113bpm 12in electronic smacker, originally with white boys vocal but now remixed by Greg Wilson into a more useful instrumental —which is quite terrifyingly violent!

MANFREDO FEST: ‘Jungle Kitten’ (Bluebird BRT 1, via PRT)
Frantically fast 69-138-0-139bpm remix of the specialist samba-ish jazz instrumental keyboards classic, on 3-track 12in with the original version, and the dead slow then soaring ‘Send In The Clowns’ vocal (an oddball item of grand beauty, aimed at radio). Strictly for jazz crowds.

SWEET ECSTASY: ‘Jam Party’ (Excaliber EXCL 531)
Jaunty 115bpm 12in rapper with guys and gals, very much like a funkier Wham ‘Young Guns’, in fact an alternative version of (and still to my mind better than) the chix warbled smacking ‘Pull Our Love Together‘ official A-side.

INDEEP: ‘When Boys Talk’ (Sound Of New York SNYL 3)
Mundane compared with the brilliant ‘DJ’, an overly similar Chic-ish 108bpm 12in jittering smacker in five different mixes.

VENUS: ‘Don’t Leave Home Without It’ (US Columbia 44-03859)
Chix sung beefily jolting 109bpm 12in thudder with squealing sax amidst the dense rhythm texture but maybe not enough song to go with the beat (which works on the floor), flipped by the whipping 131bpm ‘Goody Two Shoes’.

GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS FIVE: ‘New York New York’ (US Sugarhill SH-457)
Now this, at the same 100bpm 12in tempo and with similar socially relevant lyrics, is the proper ‘Message’ sequel — but, despite the rap raising some smiles, its jerky electro beat and overall approach are no equal to that classic.

THE BAND AKA: ‘If You Want To Know’ (Epic TA 3370)
Semi-falsetto smoothly striding 118-119-120bpm 12in smacker, not another ‘Joy’, flipped by the untidy 118-119bpm ‘Men Of The Music‘.

THE HUDSONS: ‘You Keep Me Up’ (Epic Streetwave TA 3373)
Choppily sung bass synth boomed beefy jolting 119½bpm 12in backbeat smacker, with not enough of a catchy little “na na na na na” playground chant as it builds to nice sax, the limply lurching 121½bpm ‘Don’t Try To Fight It‘ flip having been promoted on separate white label to no great effect.

MIDNITE: ‘Never Gonna Stop’ (Tivoli Records TIVT 2)
Bright enough if somewhat routine bumbling 117bpm 12in smacker now featuring their own sexy looking Carla McLaine on (badly mixed) vocals instead of the Shakatak gals, in three different versions.

DeVILLE: ‘(I’d Like To) Squeeze You Hold You’ (Philly World PWS 110)
Michael Jackson-ish though mainly Rick James-style staccato sparse pent up 119½bpm 12in hard smacker with brassy blasts, synth twiddles and acidic guitar (instrumental flip), which somehow missed on import.

AMRA: ‘Dancin’ (Canadian TCI Productions FUNK-007)
Like a less buoyantly infectious Brass Construction, this acappella introed 123(aca)-119-121-120-122(incl. break)-123(last break)-124bpm 12in tumbling groove has probably more smack than sparkle but could merit attention.

PHASE II: ‘The Roxy’ (CellulOid CYZ 102, via Charly)
Charly are test marketing a clutch of five New York rap records from the (I think, French) CellulOid label, all in full colour sleeves with graffiti spattered backs by Futura 2000, liveliest and most accessible here probably being this Material-produced familiarly electronic 103bpm 12in jitterer with comparatively busy backing and bursts of French lingo, similar flip.

FAB 5 FREDDY: ‘Une Sale Histoire’ (CellulOid CYZ 106)
Material-produced minimal slow 97bpm 12in rapper by a rapid fire male “toaster’ on flip or French talking female A-side, which at least is different.

INFINITY FEATURING GRAND MIXER D.S.T.: ‘Grand Mixer (Cuts It Up)’ (CellulOid CYZ 105)
Material co-produced electronic rhythm box and synth backed slow 0-101bpm 12in jerky hip hop jitterer with rapping interplay or instrumental flip, “very New York”.

FUTURA 2000 FEATURING THE CLASH: ‘The Escapades Of Futura 2000’ (CellulOid CYZ 104)
New York graffiti artist with an interesting autobiographical tale to tell but a rather limp rap style, despite 113-115-118bpm 12in backing by The Clash, who beef up the flip’s 119bpm dub continuation.

THE SMURFS: ‘Smurf For What It’s Worth’ (CellulOid CYZ 103)
Minimal electronic backed slow 105bpm 12in hip hopper, semi-rapped with smooth repetitive title line, rock guitar, similar flip.

JONZUN CREW: ‘Lost In Space’ LP (21 Records POLD 5098)
The usual electro stuff, not on white vinyl here, with the fast 128bpm ‘We Are The Jonzun Crew’, 125bpm ‘Space Is The Place‘ plus a separately banded new continuation, remixed 122bpm ‘Pack Jam’, dull slow current 102bpm ‘Space Cowboy‘ single, episodic 110½bpm ‘Electro Boogie Encounter‘, all pretty inessential except maybe in the Midlands!

WEEKS & CO: ‘Weeks & Co’ LP (US Salsoul SA 8560)
Glossed over in haste last week, apart from the great ‘Movin’-mixin’ 121½bpm ‘Knock Knock’ leaper, other cuts on Richie Weeks’ chix backed set are the here 119bpm Masurrati & Huey Harris-ish ‘If You’re Looking For Fun’ single, a pleasant 107bpm revival of Little Anthony’s ‘Going Out Of My Head‘, the sparse electro backed lazy 113bpm ‘Rock Candy‘ story song (and its quieter 0-113bpm ‘Rockin’ It In The Pocket‘ forerunner), plus more routine 116½bpm ‘Good To The Last Drop’, 120½bpm ‘Tunnel Of Love’.

LITTLE MILTON: ‘Guess How Much I Love You’ (LP ‘Age Ain’t Nothin’ But A Number’ US MCA-5414)
Great gritty return by the ’60s blues/soul star, recommended to old-timers especially, although this attractive jogging 111bpm swayer has modern semi-smooch appeal too. “Train spotters” will have a treat checking names involved, most surprising being the brothers Stubbs, Joe (Contours/Falcons/100 Proof) and Levi (Four Tops).

FORREST: ‘Feel The Need In Me’ (CBS TA 3411)
Detroit Emeralds oldie given a frantic 124bpm 12in Wally treatment, nothing like as distinctive as ‘Rock The Boat’.

THE REPUBLIC: ‘Don’t Believe’ (Oval FLAG 24/12)
South American carnival type happy 120bpm 12in calypso kicker, good party fun — and more “authentic” than Modern Romance!

DEE SHARP: ‘Magician’ (RCA RCAT 339)
Interesting quietly introed but then brassily bashing walking bass driven 134½bpm 12in swing arrangement by the Buzzz guy of the Marvelettes ‘My Baby Must Be A Magician’ (also currently revived in traditional style by the Sapphires). If it’s a Nightclub hit you can thank Eyes & Ears’ much bullied mailing list jocks.

PETER BROWN: ‘Overnight Sensation’ (US RCA PD-13518)
Dramatic suspenseful start to a sorta slowed down 0-106½bpm 12in ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ set at ‘Outstanding’-ish tempo, instrumental flip.

CUDY & THE RINK BAND: ‘Home Boy (Home Girls Too)’ (Sound Of New York SNYL 2)
Sparse synth ‘n smack 116¼bpm 12in funk burbler with Isley’s-ish chap and chix, brighter instrumental flip for mixers . . . but an odd choice for UK release.

OZONE: ‘(Our Hearts) Will Always Shine’ (LP ‘Glasses’ US Motown 6037ML)
Pleasant if impersonal 114bpm soul swayer recently getting attention up north, along with the smoochier 51/102-104-105bpm ‘I Can’t Wait‘, while the 111½bpm ‘Strutt My Thang‘ and the rest is routine “major label funk” (some at awful anglo-inspired fast tempos).

LENNY WHITE: ‘Attitude’ LP (US Elektra 60232-1)
Extremely disappointing album despite the excellent Keely Curtis-sung single, ‘Fascination’ being a pleasant enough 108-109-111bpm swayer and ‘You Bring Out The Best In Me‘ a Vandross-ish 40½/81bpm smooch duet, but the electronically driven 122½bpm Eddy Grant/Frontline Orchestra ‘My Turn To Love You‘ has a raw beat that’s rotten on the floor and such as the 113-115bpm ‘The Ride‘ are routine dull funk. Stick with the single!

JUNIOR: ‘Communication Breakdown — The Extreme Remix’ (Mercury MERXX 134)
Not even a freakier vocoder spiked 128bpm 12in rejig, with cooler ‘Breakdown — New York Style’ flip, can help a song lumbered with the tired old mock-reggae ‘Master Blaster’ beat.

REAL THING: ‘Street Corner Boogie’ (US Catawba CA 4200)
Long tricky percussion intro to a plodding c.116bpm 12in jolter, typical Real Thing and unable to get a release here.

JAMES BROWN: ‘Bring It On . . . Bring It On’ (US Augusta Sound CAS-94500)
Disappointing ramblingly repetitive uncomfortably rushed 0-121bpm 12in rehash of his old formula, not another ‘Rapp Payback’, but the c.72bpm B-side revival of ‘The Night Time Is The Right Time‘ could grab old Ray Charles fans.

MC CONNECTION: ‘Burnin’ For Another Shot’ (US Next Plateau NP 50013)
Electro jittering 118bpm 12in male rap treatment over the original C-Bank ‘One More Shot’.

MOSES TYSON: ‘Do You Want My Love’ (US Capitol 8550)
Slick cool soulful 127bpm 12in whipper with twiddly effects, but not a UK tempo.

SHIRLEY LEWIS: ‘Love’s Warming Up’ (Hi-Energy HET-101, via CBS/Salespeople)
Linda Lewis’s little sister sounds like a shriller Evelyn King on a Belgian recorded zingily backed routine 120bpm 3-track 12in smacker.
