HOT VINYL

INGRAM: ‘Smoothin Groovin’ (Streetwave WAVEL 3)
The Ingram Family’s superb sophisticated gently flowing yet punchily pulsating 115(intro)-113-114-115-116½(outro)bpm semi-instrumental shuffler has indeed been a jazz-funk smash on import but now as a 3-track UK 12in it’s got not only its original more moronically monotonous jiggly 108½bpm ‘DJ’s Delight‘ flip but also a brand new four song medley mixed by myself (and subsequently spoilt by Morgan Khan who snipped out the climax — which will be reinstated if there’s a second pressing!), this 108½-107½-111-112-111-111¾-0bpm ‘DJ’s Delight Medley’ blending ‘DJ’s Delight’, ‘We Like To Do It’. ‘Smoothin Groovin’ and — the now mandatory “piggyback”! — Greg Henderson’s ‘Dreamin’. I think you’ll like it.

THE STYLE COUNCIL : ‘Money-Go-Round’ (Polydor TSCX 2)
Paul Weller surprisingly ships up a good jittery driving almost David Joseph-ish 117-118-119-117-118-117bpm 12in disco beat with a long strong jazz-funk brass and piano break, reminiscent of Ian Dury & The Blockheads, while 6T’s dancers should appreciate the flip’s ‘Billy’s Bag’-type 155-154bpm organ and piano ‘Mick’s Up‘ instrumental by Mick Talbot. I’m impressed!

SMOKEY ROBINSON: ‘Touch The Sky’ (Motown TMG 1307)
Overdue release and only on 7in of his recent album’s best (title) track, a lovely tremulously whinnying 112bpm steady pulsator built around a rolling piano and walking bass, flipped by the gorgeous 108bpm ‘All My Life’s A Lie‘ — good value vinyl for quality rather than thrill seekers.

SUPA-RAP featuring T.C. ANDERSON: ‘Bills’ (Nighthawk NH 25)
Languidly weaving oddly attractive rapped-sung 0-113bpm 12in cover version re-arrangement of a “times are hard” message ditty originally out earlier this year in a more deliberately tempoed 100½bpm but still gentle sounding vocal interplay rap treatment by FREQUENCY (Hard Times HT 100), which I always liked but somehow never reviewed (both have instrumental flips).

BILL WOLFER: ‘Call Me’ (Solar E9891T)
Finis Henderson co-penned and totally sung subtle gently rattling sinuous 103-0bpm jitterer, on 3-track 12in with keyboardist Bill’s own vocodered and acidulously yowled beefier juddering 0-101½bpm ‘Camouflage‘ and lovely but largely tempoless 51bpm instrumental ‘Window On A Dream’ featuring Wonder-ful harmonica.

FINIS HENDERSON: ‘Finis’ LP (US Motown 6036ML)
Finis (a guy) does his own less densely backed 103-105bpm treatment of ‘Call Me’ on his pleasant soulful debut album, preceded by (unlisted on sleeve) a separate useful rattling 105bpm ‘Percussion Intro‘, slowies like the weaving 93bpm ‘Lovers‘, 0-87bpm ‘I’d Rather Be Gone‘, 0-41-85bpm ‘Crush On You’, 63bpm ‘You Owe It All To Love’, 0-96bpm ‘Blame It On The Night’ sounding more satisfying than the fast 0-1125bpm ‘School Girl‘, 120bpm ‘Skip To My Lou’, 125bpm ‘Making Love’.

CLEM CURTIS: ‘Dancing In The Street’ (Pressure PRESSD 1006)
Martha & The Vandellas classic becomes a good fast sparse 128bpm 12in galloper with Steve Harvey on drums, somewhat like current Forrest.

MIQUEL BROWN: ‘So Many Men So Little Time’ (Record Shack SOHOT 6, via IDS)
Pronounced “Michael” but in fact a lady, wailing away over an Ian Levine-produced zingy electronic 0-129bpm 12in backing that’s like ‘Instant Replay’ / ‘Contact’ revisited (inst. flip).

HAZELL DEAN: ‘Searchin’ (I Gotta Find A Man)’ (Proto ENAT 109)
Zingily pounding 129bpm 12in Donna Summer-ish driver, appropriately huge in Boys Town circles already.

FIRST CHOICE: ‘Let No Man Put Asunder’ (US Salsoul SG 397)
An old track from ’77, which sounds it, given the ‘Ooh I Love It’ remix treatment but (to my ears) fatally flawed by the girls dated vocals and a jerky inconsistent bounding beat, the remixes being split between Shep Pettibone and Frankie Knuckles (really!) on 5-track 12in (all BPM’s are approx as frankly it bored me silly), Frankie’s 120-118½-122-120bpm vocal and 121-118bpm instrumental possibly being better than Shep’s 119-121bpm vocal and 118-122bpm instrumental (extra acappella’s).

MICHAEL JACKSON: ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ (Epic TA 3427)
Back to a welcome disco beat for the very ‘Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)’-like 122bpm frenetic jitterer, which ends after a clapping acappella ‘Soul Makossa’ break, on 3-track 12in with its as yet unheard instrumental version and the classic old swaying 114bpm ‘Rock With You’.

CAROL WILLIAMS: ‘You’ve Reached The Bottom Line’ (Vanguard VSL 5024) Darryl Payne-produced chunky bass bumbled and synth spiked rolling 115bpm 12in tugger in Sharon Redd style, not terribly special, most jocks opting for the inst. flip.

DENNIS BROWN: ‘Your Love Gotta Hold On Me’ (JGM JGM8175, via Pinnacle)
Yet another new song using a rhythm currently much covered but originally from a late ’60s Don Drummond album (my thanks to Big Phil Etgart for exhaustive details), a slinkily pushing slow 69bpm 12in rock steady grinder.

DONNA RHODEN: ‘Don’t You’ (Ital ITD 0014)
Small voiced 17yr-old chugs lightly through some self-penned pleasant 87-88-89bpm 12in lovers rock, arranged by Alan Weekes.

DENIECE WILLIAMS: ‘Do What You Feel’ (CBS A3409)
Pleasant little lightly strutting 0-120½-121½-0bpm 7in ticker with nice sax and typically tremulous squeaky singing, not terribly substantial.

PHYLLIS HYMAN: ‘Riding The Tiger’ (Arista ARIST 12535)
“Tarzan”-introed chunkily jittering 112bpm 12in jerky rumbling jungle thudder with some more smoothly sung bits amidst the urgency, not one of her classics, produced by Narada Michael Walden (instrumental flip).

SUGARHILL GANG: ‘Be A Winner’ (Sugarhill SHL 124)
So far UK-only released jolting sparse loosely-strung 0-107bpm 12in rapper with a “be aggressive to be a success” message, flipped by the US-issued herky-jerky braggadacio 111bpm ‘The Word Is Out‘.

MEZZOFORTE: ‘Rockall’ (Steiner STE 1210)
Iceland’s scatting instrumentalists will alienate many with this awkwardly tempoed angular fast 0-136bpm 12in jazz-rock jolter, though it’s flipped by the more sympathetically paced gently sax-ed slow jazzy jogging 84bpm ‘Gazing At The Clouds‘.

T.J. JOHNSON BAND: ‘I Can Make It (Good For You)’ (Switch DSW 003)
Chick sung choppy remorseless 121½-121bpm 12in jittery jiggler of the scratchy scrubbing afro guitar type, which doesn’t quite come off.

MASTER JAM: ‘Freak With You’ (Proto ENAT 108)
Boring empty 115bpm, minimalist jolter on 3-track 12in with its inst. and a stark 131bpm remixed “Bum-biter Version” of their old ‘Dancin’ All Night’.

COCONUTS: ‘Did You Have To Love Me Like You Did?’ (EMI America 12EA 156)
Kid Creole-prod/penned disappointingly flat and dull 105(start)-103-102bpm 12in girlie group shuffler with none of the full team’s snap and crackle.

RUBY TURNER: ‘Every Soul (Disco Mix)’ (Sunflower 12 SF3, via Pinnacle)
Confusingly tempoed very empty 129bpm 12in ‘Master Blaster’-ish reggae experiment, not a good dancer.
