RECORD MIRROR’s recent DJ survey revealed that most jocks aren’t too concerned whether Beats Per Minute are calculated with finely detailed accuracy, so (and you only have yourselves to blame!), starting this issue, you will now find the BPMs are in brackets and calculated to the nearest ¼bpm with a “v” following the figure to show if the speed varies fractionally, any major shift in tempo being denoted by the intro’s BPM followed only by the highest or lowest speed reached during the course of the track (you’ll have to check for tempoless intros/outros yourselves as there will be no 0bpm, and only significant discrepancies between different mixes will be indicated) . . . Hot Vinyl starting this week also will include a number of reviews by star guest DJs, which together with the BPM streamlining should help get more quickly through the vast amount of dance product being released at the moment . . . Norman Cook, one of this week’s guests, has followed Jazzie B’s example in setting up a Soul II Soul-type organisation-cum-group called Beats International, debuting with a January 29 released though already white labelled reggae-ishly undulating revamp of The SOS Band’s old ‘Just Be Good To Me’, now called ‘Dub Be Good To Me‘ (Go! Discs GODX 39) with a girl wailed slinky A-side (95¾v bpm) or chunkier raggamuffin guys toasted and, possibly strongest of all, truly dubwise separate B-side mixes (95½v bpm) . . . Jungle Brothers’ Done By The Forces Of Nature’ LP, reviewed last week on import, turns out to be due as the first release on Pete Edge’s new WEA distributed label Eternal (WX322), rather than on Warner Bros here . . . Public Enemy ‘Welcome To The Terrordome’, likewise reviewed last week, is already out here on Def Jam (655476 6), as also now is the recently reviewed good rapping 3rd Bass ‘The Cactus Album’ (466003 1) . . . Carle Richards of Hackney’s street soul/reggae biased Hands and Heart label has set up Full Force Promotions at 45 Tudor Road, Unit 02, London E9 7SN (01-985 1512), plugging the funkier type of dance music to DJs who prove they can handle it . . . Gilles Peterson helps launch the weekly jazz, soul, funk ‘n’ fun Reelin’ with Feelin’ this Saturday (20) at Mayfair’s The Academy Wine Rooms in Cork Street . . . County Durham’s ‘real soul’ specialising Ardent Enterprises have licensed ex-Motown musical director Choker Campbell’s Detroit based Campo International label here, debuting next month with ‘I Don’t Just Want Your Body‘ by former Soul Brothers Six leader Willie John . . . Dusty Springfield’s current Pet Shop Boys created ‘In Private’ (apparently intended as the theme for the film ‘Scandal’) somehow slipped through the net before Christmas, but its rattling and galloping Shep Pettibone remix (Parlophone 12RX 6234, 127bpm) is so exciting that it shouldn’t be missed — I actually wasted three hours waiting for it to arrive by bike so that we could use it in the Capital FM New Year’s Eve party tape (synched between ‘Left To My Own Devices’ and The Communards ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’) . . . ‘The Vagabond King’ was an early Fifties movie musical about the 15th century French poet and rebellious people’s hero Francois Villon, the very one whose words are translated into German by Culture Beat’s ‘Der Erdbeermund’ — if the single’s a smash here, as seems likely, can we expect to see the film on TV? . . . IT’S SUCH A GOOD VIBRATION!

LIL LOUIS ‘I Called U’ (ffrr FXDJ 123)
This is my favourite record of the moment but it’s the review I’ve been putting off, for reasons that will become apparent! Basically, ‘I Called U’ is a fascinating, haunting, weird, War ‘Galaxy’-ishly backed jazzy wriggler full of ringing telephones with Louis philosophising to a deadpan voiced disturbingly obsessive ex-girlfriend who just isn’t listening. On the 33⅓rpm twinpack promo it is in Original Mix (118-119bpm), 0898 Mix (117¾-118¾bpm) and midway pausing Saxy Version (117¾-118¾bpm), and tempoless Over The Edge treatments, while its more ‘French Kiss’-ish coupling ‘Blackout’, bubbling and pumping through monotonous religious tracts, is in Original Mix (121¼bpm), Phase 1 (121bpm), Phase 2 (The Night The Club Lights Went Out) (121¼bpm) and ‘Tempramental’ Dub Mix (120¾bpm) treatments. Commercially, three separate 12-inchers contain respectively ‘I Called U (Original Mix/0898 Mix)’/’Blackout (Phase 1)’ (ffrr FX 123); ‘I Called U (Saxy Version)’/’Blackout (Phase 2)’ (ffrr FXR 123); ‘I Called U (Over The Edge)’/’French Kiss (US Jazz Mix/Full Length US Mix)’ (ffrr FXRR 123). Frankly, I reckon all one needs is ‘I Called U (Original Mix)’, and that’s on the album anyway!

JANET JACKSON ‘Come Back To Me (I’m Beggin’ You Mix)‘(78/39bpm) (Breakout USAT 681)
Although this crawling mushy sweet ballad is the A-side, all the excitement centres around the flip, the Shep Pettibone remixed and — get a load of this! — rapping Heavy D duetted ‘Alright’, her album’s best dance track, here bouncily leaping in its hip house-style 12″ House Mix and Hip House Dub (113bpm). However, the promo was a 33⅓rpm twinpack with three mixes of the A-side and a total eight mixes of ‘Alright’, largely further dubs and edits but including a jauntily jiggling swingbeat 12″ R&B Mix (111¾bpm).

(E’-ALLORA) ‘So What’ (123bpm) (Italian Dischi Dovero GOSSX 1)
Likely to be big, this exceptionally powerful piano and organ jangled pounding instrumental has currently familiar melodic strains from other Italian grand piano bashers, so it’s not one of the most original ones, but it will whip you along with its enthusiasm (in two untitled mixes).

TONY SCOTT ‘Get Into It’ (121¾bpm) (Champion CHAMP 12-232)
The Holland based South American red indian rapper returns even harder than before, with a Bobby Byrd “get into it, get involved” prodded terrific Doug Lazy-ish gruffly drawled breezy hip house jiggler in four mixes, already exploding just on promo.

THE BELOVED ‘Hello’ (WEA YZ426T)
Languid and rather Pet Shop Boys-like with its breathily husky intonation and studiedly inconsequential name-checking lyrics, this is a pulsing ambient burbler in its Honky Tonk (118v bpm) and Boys & Girls (118¼v bpm) versions, or rollingly jittering in its orchestra tuning introed ‘Hello‘ (101½bpm), similarly slower and largely instrumental Uncle Arthur and Godfrey’s Tonic versions, odd and interesting.

RAM JAM ‘Black Betty (Rough ‘n’ Ready Remix)’ (120bpm) (Epic 655430 6)
The included Original Version (116-248-118v bpm) of this yowling guitar scratched, gong bashed and drums thrashed “whoa Black Betty, bamm-a-lam” rock smash was much played by discos back in 1977 , but now — cleaned up and straightened out in a typically neat bubbly striding Ben Liebrand remix (not due commercially until February 5) — it’s gonna be massive all over again! The tune, incidentally, was originated by the legendary Leadbelly, pioneering late blues man Huddie Ledbetter.

ADAMSKI ‘N-R-G’ (119¾bpm) (MCA Records MCAT 1386)
Culled from the one man acid house band’s ‘LIVEANDIRECT’ instrumental album are this twittering, jangling, thudding and pausing now fractionally slower jiggler, the now much slower jerkily leaping ‘I Love Teknology’ (123¾bpm) and surgingly chugging, with a trick rapidly accelerating finish, ‘Love And Life’ (119¾-180bpm), while not from the album is the chunkily loping pleasantly tuneful ‘Viva-City‘ (120¾bpm).

SUENO LATINO featuring Carolina Damas ‘Luxuria’ (119bpm) (German BCM Records BCM 12379)
Again with twittering birds (though not necessarily a whippoorwill this time!) and sexily muttering Carolina, this still ambient but more beefily tripping hustler is in Massimino L’s swirling Extended Version, Cutmaster G’s pulsing Techno Age Mix, Angelino Albanese’s rattling Vocal House Mix, and an A Cappella Version.

ORBITAL ‘Chime’ (119¼bpm) (Oh’Zone Records ZONE 001, via 01-384 2320)
Jazzy M’s Fulham based Vinyl Zone record shop is only distributing a limited 1,000 pressing in London and Manchester of this therefore already eagerly sought modest twittery shuffling acidic instrumental, by Sevenoaks’ D.S. Building Contractors, the brothers Paul & Phil Hartnoll, flipped with the hypnotist overdubbed (clever idea) gently twittering ambient ‘Deeper‘ (120bpm).

JAMIE J MORGAN ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ (107bpm) (Tabu XPR 1481)
Soul II Soul’s album cover photographer and Neneh Cherry’s ‘Buffalo Stance’ co-writer makes his rapping Soul Sisters and “doo do-doo”-ing Caron Wheeler and Claudia Fontaine accompanied vocal debut languidly talking through this strongly updated jiggling and scrubbing Lou Reed remake, flipped on uninformative promo by its edit and a sparser more hip hop alternative mix (111¼bpm).

SYBIL ‘Walk On By’ (95½v bpm) (Lisson Records DOLE Q14, via PWL Records)
Another enduringly beautiful Burt Bacharach & Hal David-penned Dionne Warwick classic revival as the inevitable follow-up to ‘Don’t Make Me Over’, a similarly Smith & Mighty inspired Soul II Soul-ish sweetly swaying chunky jogger in Club, Radio (95¼v bpm) and Acappella remixes by PWL’s Tony King, plus the attractively warbled more beefily jiggling strong swingbeat-ish ‘Here Comes My Love‘ (103¼bpm).

THE JASON LOAD EXPERIENCE featuring IYONA ‘Mainline ’90’ (US Quark QK021)
This girl wailed Leroy Burgess & Russell Patterson penned tune gets several different treatments, possibly best being the swingbeat-ishly jiggling bouncy Swing Vocal (114¼bpm), the rawly bounding dated soul disco Original Vocal (121¼bpm) being tidied into the briskly cantering slick House Mix (121¼bpm) and organ chugged instrumental House Dub (120¾bpm).

SHAKATAK ‘Better Believe It’ (111½bpm) (Polydor PZ 65)
Drily funky James Brown beats chinked tight Norman Cook remix of a girls cooed jitterer, with a drier drums thrashed repetitive dub, proving hotter on promo (ahead of February release) than the Nigel Wright remixed A-side’s not dissimilar though somehow more dated beefy bass bumped jiggly ‘Back To The Groove (Swingbeat Mix)‘ (111¾bpm).

AGE OF CHANCE ‘Higher Than Heaven (Righteous Club Mix)’ (98¼bpm) (Virgin VST 1228)
Freddy Bastone remixed quaveringly whinneyed jogging pop-gospel-soul lurcher with a naggingly familiar lilt, contrasted by the funkier flip’s altogether tougher jerkily snapping sinister instrumental Raze Your Hands Mix (99-98½v bpm) and Raze The Beats (Berrios Beats) (99¼bpm), these latter also flipping Freddy’s now separately promoed less ominously rolling instrumental Wiseblood Mix (98½v bpm) (VSTDJ 1228).

Damian-ish guy exhorted galloping fun filled terrific breezy basher, recently huge in the States thanks in part to its zany video and now promoed here in Ben Gross’s US Mix plus Danny Rampling’s more subtly subdued Sixties jazz-funk flavoured UK-only Remix and Dub (133bpm), not unlike a hip Bananarama;

KYLIE MINOGUE ‘Tears On My Pillow’ (70bpm) (PWL Records PWLT 47), excellent faithful revival of Little Anthony & The Imperials’ 1958 US smash doo-wop classic, flipped by the plaintively tuneful scurrying ‘We Know The Meaning Of Love‘ (120bpm);

JIMMY SOMERVILLE ‘You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)’ (128bpm) (London LONX 249), the late Sylvester’s 1978 Hi-NRG disco classic has been just waiting for the similarly falsetto whinneying Jimmy to sing it, which he does in easy to anticipate frantically galloping style;

SYLVESTER ‘You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) (The One World Remix)’ (123½bpm) (SouthBound SEWT 70, via Pinnacle), still probably better to many people’s minds, the original meanwhile is due again next week, unobtrusively updated in a piano jangled twittery smooth bounding remix by the One World team;

ELECTRONIC ‘Getting Away With It (Club Mixes)’ (Factory FAC 257R), typical Neil Tennant intoned, Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr supported canterer in its Original Version (126bpm), now also remixed by DJs Mike Pickering & Graeme Park in electronically fluttered sparse clean galloping Vocal Remix (127bpm) and w-i-d-e stereo instrumental Nude Mix (126bpm) versions, with an instrumental throbbing twittery ‘Lucky Bag (Miami Edit)‘ (126bpm) too;

HALO JAMES ‘Could Have Told You So (Extended Mix)’ (122½bpm) (Epic HALO T2), orchestrally introed attractive canterer with lovely lush male harmonies reminiscent of vintage US groups like the Duprees;

MARTIKA ‘More Than You Know’ (117½bpm) (CBS 655326 6), catchily spurting plaintive latin pop kicker, her Jellybean produced debut if my memory serves me well (it’s hard to tell from a white label promo), reissued in a jittery strong mix;

KAOMA ‘Dancando Lambada’ (118¾bpm) (CBS 655235 8), less exotically swirling but doubtless easy to programme and useful follow-up for dirty dancing fans, presumably again in Portuguese although almost sounding more African than South American this time;

MARGARETH MENEZES ‘Tenda Do Amor (Magia) (Extended Remix)’ (115¼v bpm) (Polydor PZ 70), gruff Brazilian girl sung jerkily shuffling Lambada jolter beefily remixed here by Living In A Box members, not another Kaoma though a possible ‘grower’;

THE MARINES ‘Go(ne) Go(ne) Now’ (118bpm) (CBS WETIT Q2), apparently promo-only rumbling and throbbing rhythm dominated remix with some background “go go now” male chants and ragamuffin-ish female repetition, very different from the commercially available ‘Go Go Now’ (118¼bpm) (CBS WETIT T2), a Harding & Curnow co-produced jauntily rollicking Mel & Kim/Bananarama-ish strident girl group chanter;

ROCOCO ‘Italo House Mix‘ (121½bpm) (Mercury MERX 314), neat enough Mirage-type remade soundalike medley of predictable recent disco hits;

RICO ‘Spring Rain (Club Mix)’ (124bpm) (Debut DEBTX 3086, via Pacific), remarkably Raul Orellana-like remake of the old Silvetti disco instrumental;

CHILLY ‘For Your Love (Extended Version)’ (116¼bpm) (Urban URBX 47), electro introed then surging hoarsely chanted and calmly thumped episodic long Euro treatment of the Yardbirds’ oldie. not quite another ‘Oh Well’;

HAPPY MONDAYS ‘Madchester-Rave On’ (Factory FAC 242R), Paul Oakenfold remixed double sider, both with bursts of ‘I Am The Walrus’-type Beatles-esque vocal, ‘Rave On!’ (105¾v bpm) being a ‘For The Love Of Money’ bassed episodic organ washed and guitar chinked moody jogger while ‘Hallelujah‘ (98bpm) is a plodding jangly thumper overlaid at times by worrying female shrieks and monkish chanting;

RENEGADE SOUNDWAVE ‘Probably A Robbery (12 Gauge Turbo)’ (124½bpm) (Mute 12 MUTE 102), monotonous bass burbled and spacey synth washed instrumental rumbler, flipped by the episodically throbbing ‘Ozone Breakdown 90 (Uprising Mix)‘ (120½bpm) and its Original Version (119¾bpm), too arty for most dancefloors;

CUMBIA CUMBIA ‘La Cologiala (Dance Mix)’ (101-107¼v bpm) (RCA 612 992), Snowboy re-edited authentic jerkily surging brassy Colombian chanter, probably too dull to be another ‘Lambada’ despite current use advertising coffee.
